Year 1/2 Newsletter

November 2020

Welcome Back!

We hope you have had a fantastic half term break and are ready for another busy term in Year 1/2. We are delighted that Miss Wattam will still be with us this half term. Mrs Moore will also be teaching the class on a Friday.

It has been fantastic to see the children start Year 1/2 with great enthusiasm and they have already produced some fantastic pieces of work in all of our subject areas. In English, we will be learning to write a letter and our own instructions. We will be learning addition and subtraction in Maths and we will be continuing learning and conducting investigations about ‘living things and their habitats’ in Science. In RE, we will be looking at Islamic birth rituals and exploring what it means to belong to a community.

This term, we will be focusing on history and learning all about ‘Childhood Through The Ages’, this will include past and present toys, schools, homes and clothing, dating from the Victorian era until present day. We will be learning about food in Design and Technology, where we will be focusing on different types of food and developing our food preparation skills, such as chopping, grating and peeling.

We have been really thrilled with the progress children are making in their reading. How often children read at home has been a big factor, so thank you for your ongoing support. Please remember that children should try to read for 5 to 10 minutes each day, with a focus on their word reading alongside their understanding of the text. Most children should now be on the correct level of book, but please let us know if they are finding it particularly tricky or not challenging enough. Children should also be encouraged to read their own favourite books at home as well. Please remember to record any reading experiences in their reading records as they will be awarded house points.

We will continue to send home a list of spellings each week which will be stapled into your child’s reading record. Thank you for supporting your child to learn these for a short spelling check each Friday.

PE will continue to take place on a Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure children have a suitable and clearly labelled kit for outdoor activities, including trainers and warm jumpers, especially now the colder weather is here! Unfortunately, due to current restrictions we are unable to take the children swimming this term.
